Weather Policy

This is a rain-or-shine event! We’ll be playing through the elements unless conditions become unsafe. Please see the full weather policy below.

Lightning Protocol

  • All participants, staff, spectators, officials, coaches, and volunteers must immediately evacuate the beach courts and go to cars or indoor facilities.
  • Do not seek shelter under trees.
  • The area must be lightning-free for 30 minutes, as per Environment Canada, before play resumes.
  • Following the 30-minute waiting period, play will resume.

Extreme Heat Protocol

An extreme heat protocol may be activated based on current weather conditions. If the humidex reaches or exceeds 40 degrees and Environment Canada issues a humidex warning, teams will be permitted the following:

  • Players may drink water while walking between side switches, as long as it does not cause delays to the match.
  • Each team will receive one extra timeout per set.
  • If a team plays back-to-back matches, an additional 5 minutes will be added between those matches.

Tournament staff will monitor the weather throughout the event and make final decisions to ensure the safety of all participants.

Air Quality Protocol

  • If the AQHI is above 7, practices and league play will be cancelled or rescheduled.
  • Tournament staff will arrive on site in the morning at the scheduled time and begin setup to prepare for the tournament.
  • If the Air Quality Health Index reaches 7 or higher at the time of the players meeting, the tournament will be cancelled or the start time may be delayed.
  • Teams are expected to arrive with the intention of playing until otherwise notified by Volleyball Alberta.
  • Extremely high AQHI conditions may result in earlier tournament cancellations.

Suspended Play Policy

Play shall be suspended if the Tournament Coordinator foresees any of the following:

  • Inclement weather, including lightning
  • Safety concerns
  • Any other discretionary reason to clear the venue

An announcement over the speaker will be used to notify participants that play has been suspended.

Notification of Suspended Play Due to Lightning

  • All athletes must immediately evacuate the beach and go to cars or indoor facilities.
  • Do not seek shelter under trees.
  • Athletes who are playing are responsible for recording the score and taking note of the court they are playing on.
  • Notification to resume play will be given by the Tournament Coordinator.

Resuming Play

  • Athletes are responsible for being at the courts when play resumes.
  • Following a 10-minute warm-up, officials and athletes will finish the game.
  • Modified play may occur at the discretion of the Tournament Coordinator.

Program Cancellation Due to Weather

  • In the event of severe weather, including thunder or lightning, causing a cancellation at any point during the tournament, teams may be issued a refund.
  • If an AQHI of 7 or above is anticipated at least 1 day before the event, teams will be issued a full refund, minus a 3% credit card processing fee.
  • All refunds will require a 3% processing fee.

Re-tiering

Ensuring competitive balance through dynamic movement between divisions throughout the season.

Tier Group Sizes

Our tiers are structured with 8-12 teams for Co-Ed divisions and 4-6 teams for Men’s/Women’s divisions to maximize game variety while keeping competition tight.

The Cycle

To keep the competition fresh and fair, teams undergo a re-tiering process every 3 to 4 weeks. This allows for movement based on recent performance, ensuring teams are always playing against opponents of a similar skill level.

Division Movement

Top Team(s) Up

VS

Bottom Team(s) Down

Movement occurs at the end of each rotation cycle based on division standings.

How We Re-Tier

Total Sets Won

Primary factor based on number of sets that each team wins

Head to Head

Direct result between tied teams decides ranking.

Original Seeding

Baseline seeding used if performance metrics are identical.
